Arafat poisoned

Late Palestinian Authority chairman Yasser Arafat’s blood contained the deadly HIV virus, Arafat’s personal physician told Jordanian media over the weekend. Dr. Ashraf al-Kurdi stressed, however, that Arafat did not die of AIDS – which is caused by the virus.

Jordanian news site Amman quoted al-Kurdi – a former Jordanian health ministry official – as saying that the virus had been injected into Arafat’s bloodstream close to his death, and that the real cause of the chairman’s death was poison.

Hours earlier, al-Kurdi was interviewed on television news station Al-Jazeera. However, the network cut short the live interview with al-Kurdi as soon as he mentioned that the former chairman had contracted HIV.

To Amman, al-Kurdi said that Arafat’s death was suspicious in several other respects. "I would usually be summoned to attend to Arafat immediately, even when all he had was a simple cold," said al-Kurdi, who served as Arafat’s personal physician for 18 years. "But when his medical situation was really deteriorating, they chose not to call me at all."

According to al-Kurdi, Arafat’s wife, Suha, refused to allow the doctor to visit Arafat in the private Paris hospital where he was being treated. Al-Kurdi added that he was denied access to Arafat’s body after his death. In the Amman interview, he demanded the French government set up a commission of inquiry.

However, al-Kurdi did not explain why he did not come forth sooner and reveal the information. On September 9, 2005, al-Kurdi told Haaretz that "any doctor would tell you that [Arafat’s symptoms] are the symptoms of a poisoning."

Arafat was pronounced dead on November 11 at the age of 75. The exact cause of his illness is unknown. Arab journalists and opinion-shapers have repeatedly accused Israel under former prime minister Ariel Sharon of poisoning Arafat.

US slipping in life expectancy

Americans are living longer than ever, but not as long as people in 41 other countries.

For decades, the United States has been slipping in international rankings of life expectancy, as other countries improve health care, nutrition and lifestyles.

Countries that surpass the U.S. include Japan and most of Europe, as well as Jordan, Guam and the Cayman Islands.

"Something’s wrong here when one of the richest countries in the world, the one that spends the most on health care, is not able to keep up with other countries," said Dr. Christopher Murray, head of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington.

A baby born in the United States in 2004 will live an average of 77.9 years. That life expectancy ranks 42nd, down from 11th two decades earlier, according to international numbers provided by the Census Bureau and domestic numbers from the National Center for Health Statistics.

Andorra, a tiny country in the Pyrenees mountains between France and Spain, had the longest life expectancy, at 83.5 years, according to the Census Bureau. It was followed by Japan, Macau, San Marino and Singapore.

The shortest life expectancies were clustered in Sub-Saharan Africa, a region that has been hit hard by an epidemic of HIV and AIDS, as well as famine and civil strife. Swaziland has the shortest, at 34.1 years, followed by Zambia, Angola, Liberia and Zimbabwe.

Researchers said several factors have contributed to the United States falling behind other industrialized nations. A major one is that 45 million Americans lack health insurance, while Canada and many European countries have universal health care, they say.

But "it’s not as simple as saying we don’t have national health insurance," said Sam Harper, an epidemiologist at McGill University in Montreal. "It’s not that easy."

Among the other factors:

_ Adults in the United States have one of the highest obesity rates in the world. Nearly a third of U.S. adults 20 years and older are obese, while about two-thirds are overweight, according to the National Center for Health Statistics.

"The U.S. has the resources that allow people to get fat and lazy," said Paul Terry, an assistant professor of epidemiology at Emory University in Atlanta. "We have the luxury of choosing a bad lifestyle as opposed to having one imposed on us by hard times."

Racial disparities. Black Americans have an average life expectancy of 73.3 years, five years shorter than white Americans.

Black American males have a life expectancy of 69.8 years, slightly longer than the averages for Iran and Syria and slightly shorter than in Nicaragua and Morocco.

_ A relatively high percentage of babies born in the U.S. die before their first birthday, compared with other industrialized nations.

Forty countries, including Cuba, Taiwan and most of Europe had lower infant mortality rates than the U.S. in 2004. The U.S. rate was 6.8 deaths for every 1,000 live births. It was 13.7 for Black Americans, the same as Saudi Arabia.

"It really reflects the social conditions in which African American women grow up and have children," said Dr. Marie C. McCormick, professor of maternal and child health at the Harvard School of Public Health. "We haven’t done anything to eliminate those disparities."

Another reason for the U.S. drop in the ranking is that the Census Bureau now tracks life expectancy for a lot more countries _ 222 in 2004 _ than it did in the 1980s. However, that does not explain why so many countries entered the rankings with longer life expectancies than the United States.

Murray, from the University of Washington, said improved access to health insurance could increase life expectancy. But, he predicted, the U.S. won’t move up in the world rankings as long as the health care debate is limited to insurance.

Policymakers also should focus on ways to reduce cancer, heart disease and lung disease, said Murray. He advocates stepped-up efforts to reduce tobacco use, control blood pressure, reduce cholesterol and regulate blood sugar.

"Even if we focused only on those four things, we would go along way toward improving health care in the United States," Murray said. "The starting point is the recognition that the U.S. does not have the best health care system. There are still an awful lot of people who think it does."

Bied weerstand teen misdaad!

Dit moet tweede natuur by u word.

Image

‘One for all’

Mugabe must not be allowed in Portugal

I lived and worked in Zimbabwe in the 1960s. Then it was Rhodesia and Ian Smith was in charge. In those days rebellion was gentler than it is today.

The governor, Sir Humphrey Gibbs, who had refused to recognise Mr Smith’s unilateral declaration of independence (UDI), still lived in Government House. He declared his visitors’ book open for those wishing to show their loyalty to the Queen.

Not to be outdone, Clifford Dupont, Mr Smith’s alternative governor, who lived on the same street, announced that his book would also be open for those who supported UDI. I drove down, in my battered Morris Minor, to find a policeman enquiring which book I wished to sign and pointing me in the right direction! What a very British way to fight against tyranny.

Today, politics in Zimbabwe is a grimmer business. The country has gone from being a breadbasket to a basket case. Inflation is more than 6,000 per cent a year, most whites have left and Robert Mugabe’s thugs beat up political rivals while plundering the nation’s assets.

There is little the rest of the world can do to hasten Mr Mugabe’s downfall.

South Africa is the only country that has real clout but President Thabo Mbeki, to his shame, refuses to act. This is a real tragedy. It was South Africa’s withdrawal of support, under P.W. Botha, that eventually forced Mr Smith to abandon UDI.

But Britain and Europe can still make an impact. Mr Mugabe and his henchmen are, currently, banned from visiting all European Union countries. But that ban is under threat from the proposed EU-African Union summit due to be held in Lisbon later this year. The Portuguese are desperate for the summit to go ahead. They know Mr Mugabe should not attend but fear an African Union boycott if he is excluded.

There are already signs of this becoming an embarrassing political fudge. José Sócrates, Portugal’s prime minister, has declared that "appropriate diplomatic formulae will be found". An unnamed British official has said that "the issue of whether he is there or not should not detract from the substance or overshadow the summit".

There has now been the absurd suggestion that Mr Mugabe might remain banned from Europe as president of Zimbabwe but be allowed to attend the summit as a member of the African Union delegation. Such an outcome would be a humiliation for the EU and should be unequivocally ruled out.

In the UK, Gordon Brown, prime minister, has tried to give the impression that Africa matters to him, while David Miliband, foreign secretary, has declared that human rights are a priority. So far both have been ambivalent and ambiguous on this issue. They have said they do not wish Mr Mugabe to attend, but are vague as to what should happen if the Portuguese or the African Union disagree.

This is not good enough. They should declare that if Mr Mugabe is allowed into Portugal, to strut around the proceedings, Britain will not attend. Neither the prime minister, nor foreign secretary nor any British diplomat should be present. We should do everything in our power to persuade other EU members to take the same line.

The issues at stake are considerable, for Europe and Africa as well as Zimbabwe. For Europeans there is an understandable desire for the summit to go ahead after a gap of seven years. The EU is nervous of the impact China is making in Africa and wants to remind Africans of the great potential that exists for trade with Europe. Southern Europeans, especially the French, Spanish and Italians, are worried about massive further migration from north Africa if poverty persists there.

But Africa still needs Europe more than the reverse. China can offer capital investment and turn a blind eye to human rights abuses but its roots in Africa are superficial and its interests purely resource-driven. Africa and Europe, in comparison, are geographical neighbours with much common history, sharing geopolitical concerns in the Mediterranean, the Middle East and the Muslim world.

The EU must hold its nerve. It must explain that while Zimbabwe can be represented, Mr Mugabe cannot attend. Diplomats should focus on devising a formula that will keep him away, not one that will enable him to attend.

There is one further, not insignificant, consideration. If the EU fudges this we not only betray the brave people of Zimbabwe; we say goodbye to any prospect of a meaningful European foreign policy. That should concentrate minds in Brussels wonderfully.

Iran calls for US to pull out of Iraq

An end to violence in Iraq depends on the US withdrawing its troops, Iran told Iraq’s prime minister yesterday, seeking to deflect blame for bloodshed that the US directs at Tehran.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, facing political woes at home and US criticism for lack of progress in bridging sectarian division, won support from Shiite Iran in a visit to Tehran.

With Shiite Muslims now in power also in Baghdad, ties between the two oil-rich countries have improved since US-led forces in 2003 toppled Iraqi president Saddam Hussein, a Sunni Arab who waged an eight-year war against Iran in the 1980s.

But the US military accuses Iran of arming and training militias behind some of the violence threatening to tear Iraq apart. Iran rejects the charge, and blames the bloodshed on the presence of about 162000 troops.

Baghdad has urged both countries to negotiate and not fight out their differences on Iraqi soil. “We regard Iraq’s security as our own security and that of the region,” Iranian First Vice-President Parviz Davoudi told Maliki, the Irna news agency reported.

“Establishment of stability and calm in Iraq depends on … the withdrawal of the occupying forces and an end to their interference in Iraq and also on the authority of the government of Mr Maliki,” Davoudi said.

Maliki, who also met Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and other leaders, faces mounting pressure to secure a power-sharing deal among Iraq’s warring sects before a US report next month on strategy in Iraq.

Also yesterday, tens of thousands of Shiite pilgrims converged on a shrine in northern Baghdad, some beating their heads and chests with their hands and others dancing in a circle to honour an eighth century saint known for hiding his anger.

Reuters gets a sinking feeling

News agency Reuters has been forced to admit that footage it released last week purportedly showing Russian submersibles on the seabed of the North Pole actually came from the movie Titanic.

The images were reproduced around the world – including by the Guardian and Guardian Unlimited – alongside the story of Russia planting its flag below the North Pole on Thursday last week.

But it has now emerged that the footage actually showed two Finnish-made Mir submersibles that were employed on location filming at the scene of the wreck of the RMS Titanic ship in the north Atlantic some 10 years ago.

This footage was used in sequences in James Cameron’s 1997 blockbuster about the 1912 disaster.

The mistake was only revealed after a 13-year-old Finnish schoolboy contacted a local newspaper to tell them the images looked identical to those used in the movie.

Reuters has admitted that it took the images from Russian state television channel RTR and wrongly captioned them as file footage originating from the Arctic.

RTR had also used the footage to illustrate stories about the North Pole expedition, but it is thought as library footage, and it never claimed it was actually of the flag-planting.

The pictures were first broadcast by RTR when the Russians were still several hours away from the North Pole.

Reuters distributed a package of clips that included the scenes from Titanic, alongside computer animations and footage of ships on the surface at the North Pole.

In its piece on the subject, two of the four Reuters pictures were from the Titanic filming.

Reuters has now apologised for the error and has made changes to its video material on the expedition, with captions denoting the various origins of the file footage used.

In a statement, Reuters said: "On August 2, 2007 in a TV story about two Russian submersibles planting a flag on the seabed under the North Pole, we used file shots of MIR submersibles as part of this story.

"Reuters mistakenly identified this file footage as originating from the Arctic, and not the North Atlantic where the footage was shot.

"This footage was taken during the search for the Titanic and copyright is held by Russian State broadcaster RTR.

"This location error was corrected as soon as it was brought to our attention. A still image of the submersibles was also taken from the footage and put out on the Reuters photo wire. The caption has been corrected."

The incident is doubly embarrassing for the agency since it follows a case in August last year in which it published an image by a freelancer of Israeli bombings in Lebanon that had been dramatised using photo manipulation, with the addition of smoke rising from allegedly burning buildings.

After that gaffe, Reuters promised to tighten up its controls on material being put out in its name.

Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge stel haar saak

Image

Madlala-Routledge

“Viva the people!“ het sy uitgeroep.

Mini-tsumani could be weapons’testing

A giant wave described by local residents as a "mini-tsunami" claimed the lives of 12 Algerian bathers last week on a beach in the west of the Mediterranean-rim country, officials said Wednesday.

Algeria’s civil protection agency could give no official explanation for the giant wave that struck a beach near the town of Mostaganem on Friday.

Loth Bonatiro, a chief research scientist at Algeria’s Centre for Research in Astronomy, Astrophysics and Geophysics (CRAAG), said he thought the wave could have been the result of conventional weapons’ testing.

The phenomenon "could have been caused by a scientific test and one could guess that it was a scientific test of conventional weapons," he told AFP, adding that France, Italy and Spain all conduct these sorts of tests.

"It is however difficult to speak of a tsunami, because such an event is on a much larger scale, while the wave at Mostaganem affected only one beach," the professor said.

A tremor measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale was registered at 2108 GMT in the middle of the Mediterranean basin by an observation centre in the French city of Strasbourg, but not by the CRAAG.

The failure to detect this tremor could have been down to a malfunction of the centre’s instruments, said Bonatiro.

Central banks intervene

The Bank of Canada and other central banks around the world pumped billions of dollars into the financial system Thursday in a bid to calm jittery investors and ease concerns about a looming credit crunch that battered North American stock markets.

In an unusual step, the Bank of Canada said Thursday it will "provide liquidity to support the stability of the Canadian financial system and the continued functioning of financial markets."

"The bank is closely monitoring developments, and will deal with issues as they arise," it said in a statement.

By mid afternoon, the central bank had made more than $1.6 billion available to Canadian banks at its regular interest rate, far more than its recent cash infusions into the financial system.

Such a public reassurance is rare – the last time it happened in Canada was following the Sept. 11 terror attacks in New York and Washington. But it shows how worried regulators have become over the credit crunch that is raising interest rates and making it tougher to borrow in financial markets.

In Europe, worries that liquidity was drying up because some banks are unable to value securities backed by subprime – or high-risk – U.S. mortgages pushed the European Central Bank to inject a torrent of cash into markets, lending more than US$130 billion in overnight funds to banks at a bargain rate of four per cent.

The U.S. Federal Reserve, the world’s most powerful central bank, added $24 billion to the banking system.

"This is a mini-panic," said Joseph Battipaglia, chief investment officer at Ryan Beck & Co. in New York, calling the central banks’ injection of money unprecedented evidence that problems in subprime lending are spilling into the general economy.

"All the things that had been denied up until this point are unravelling."

The credit fears pushed North American markets deeply into the red Thursday, with both the TSX and New York closing down – the Dow nearly 400 points lower – in a volatile trading day that started bad and only seemed to get worse.

The culprit was U.S. credit liquidity worries, which surged back to the forefront of investor concerns after news that French bank BNP Paribas is freezing three funds that have struggled amid the shaky U.S. mortgage market.

Toronto’s S&P/TSX composite index ended down 280.18 points to 13,478.01, while the Dow Jones industrial average was down 387.18 at 13,270.68, at its lowest level of the day.

Meanwhile, the Canadian dollar fell 0.71 of a cent to 94.65 cents US after briefly losing nearly a penny and a half in earlier trading.

The loonie’s struggle is connected to the credit worries, said Avery Shenfeld, currency specialist at CIBC World Markets.

"The Canadian dollar has been tied up in the same phenomenon, so when there’s talk that hedge funds will have to be cutting back on their leverage, the currencies that had earlier been rallying are the ones that are sold off," he said.

The announcement by BNP Paribas raised the spectre of a widening impact of U.S. credit market problems. The idea that anyone – banks, investors, companies, ordinary consumers – can’t get money when they need it unnerved a stock market that has suffered through weeks of volatility triggered by concerns about tight credit and bad subprime mortgages.

The sub-prime market, where lenders provided mortgages with little oversight to borrowers who had little ability to handle the loan, has led to the collapse of a chunk of the U.S. housing market, leading to growing foreclosures and the collapse of companies who lent too freely.

The sub-prime market accounted for about 20 per cent of the U.S. mortgage industry. In Canada, such risker loans make up only about five per cent of the market.

However, the problems in the United States have made getting credit more difficult in Canada as well.

German Bank Crisis

A senior European banking source reports that the interbank money market closed down this morning for two to three hours, for the first time ever. Rumors had spread that the German Bundesbank was holding an emergency meeting because of a collapse of a major German bank, believed to be Westdeutsches Landesbank, one of the largest in Germany. The Bundesbank then released a statement saying that the meeting was to discuss the IKB banking crisis.

The source said that a Westdeutsches Landesbank failure would have collapsed the entire global financial system. The source underlined that this ongoing crisis is far worse then anything he has witnessed.

The next threat to the banking system in Germany, which will have obvious global ramifications, is what is called Asset Backed Commissioned Paper. Banks issue these to customers such as hedge funds and other banks, which, theoretically, can draw on them in case of emergency. The problem is that banks have been issuing far more then they should have. The deadline for the hedge funds and other customers to draw on these ABC-Ps is between August 13 and 15. If their customers rush to draw on them, this will be unsustainable for the banks.

The source said that these ABC-Ps were involved in the IKB bank crisis, because its Rhineland Funding unit had drawn on one of these, forcing IKB to cover it. Then IKB requested to draw on one of these ABC-Ps it had with Deutsche Bank, but the latter refused to honor it, and IKB collapsed.

Another senior banking source told EIR that he too had heard that the interbank money market had closed, and it had been closed under orders of the European Central Bank (ECB), so that the latter could funnel emergency credit to selected, troubled banks.

Meanwhile Bloomberg News reported that the ECB, in an "unprecedented" response to banks in desperate need of cash, loaned 94.8 billion euros to these banks. This followed a jump in overnight lending rates the banks charge each other, to the highest level in six years.
