Czech town rejects US radar

Residents of Mirosov, a small Czech town of some 2,000 near the Brdy military zone where the United States seeks to place a missile shield radar base, have rejected the US facility in a local referendum. On Sunday, the CTK news agency said all but 30 of the 897 valid votes cast were against erecting the radar base.

The referendum is not politically binding in Prague so it’s up to the town’s council to try and halt the base’s construction. Another 13 municipalities in the region have received the same mandate from their residents. Several other towns in the military zone’s vicinity have rejected the base in opinion polls.
