President Barack Obama het Woensdag vir die eerste keer ooit ’n besoek aan moskee in die VSA gebring en ’n versoek tot Amerikaners gerig om groter verdraagsaamheid teenoor die miljoene Moslems in dié land te toon.
Hy het gevra dat inwoners hulle vooroordele en stereotiperings konfronteer wat midde ’n toename oor teenterrorisme praatjies in die presidentsveldtog aan die oplaai is.
Hy het by die Islamitiese Vereniging van Baltimore, ’n voorstedelike kampus met ’n moskee en skool, gesprekke gevoer met die Moslem-gemeenskap oor godsdiens-verdraagsaamheid en -vryheid.
Hy het ook later die dag ’n toespraak gelewer oor hoe die VSA ekstremisme kan takel deur met Moslems saam te werk, pleks van die vyand te sien.
Sy besoek was vir Moslem-kampvegters ’n lank verwagte gebaar. Die feit dat hy dit tot sy laaste jaar as staatshoof uitgestel het, is ‘n bewys dat die kwessie van toenadering nie gewild is onder kiesers nie.
Die VSA het reeds honderdduisende Moslems van kant gemaak in Noord-Afrika en die Midde-Ooste met militêre optrede vir oliebelange.
Getuienis is aan die oplaai dat Amerika selfs jihadiste in Sirië befonds.

Lyk na ‘n goeie idee, maar persoonlik dink ek nie enige “erkenning” van Obama se kant het veel betekenis nie – nie vir my nie en ek vermoed ook nie vir baie Amerikaners nie.
Maar hierdie besoek aan die moskee (wat ‘n bietjie van ‘n omstrede geskiedenis het) is eintlik nie vreemd nie – Obama was as kind dikwels in die moskee. Hy het in Indonesie ‘n Moslem Madras-skool bygewoon totdat hy 12 of so was. Ek dink hy weet hoe om te buig as jy bid!
