Die land se mynbedryf is gereed vir groei, het president Jacob Zuma Dinsdag gesê.
“Die R20 miljard belegging in die diamantbedryf, die grootste enkele belegging in die diamantbedryf in dekades, stuur seine wat inderdaad wys ons mynbousektor is gereed vir groei, en dat dit ‘n blink toekoms het,” het hy gesê in ‘n voorbereide toespraak.
“Die belegging sal sonder twyfel ‘n hupstoot aan diamantproduksie gee, waar die land sy voorrang in die afgelope jare verloor het.”
Hy het gepraat by die bekendstelling van die konstruksiefase van De Beers se ondergrondse Venetiadiamantmyn in Musina, Limpopo.
Hy het gesê die belegging sal diamantproduksie versterk en het die land as ‘n beleggingsbestemming gewild maak.
“Deur saam te werk, moet ons verseker dat ons mynbousektor selfs verder groei. Ons moet dus die regte omgewing vir groei skep. Dit sluit in die implementering van transformasiemaatreëls asook om arbeidsmarkstabiliteit te bevorder in die sektor,” het Zuma gesê .
Die president het by die geleentheid die geweld in Noord-Wes se mynbedryf veroordeel.
Hy het genoem dat die National Union of Mineworkers se takvoorsitter by Marikana vermoor is verlede week.
“Sulke voorvalle het geen plek in ‘n demokratiese samelewing soos ons s’n nie.”
Zuma het gesê die skietery by Marikana verlede jaar het getoon dat werk gedoen moet word om die lewens van die mynwerkers en die omliggende gemeenskappe te verbeter. Transformasie in die sektor moet versnel word.
