The Arab Spring long ago turned into an Islamist Winter. The global political order that once rested on oil’s soaring price is doomed. The International Energy Agency (IEA), says prices might not again reach the $50 to $60 range until the 2020s, or make it back to $85 until 2040. The “peak” nonsense, not surprisingly, caused Brent prices to rise to stratospheric levels, reaching a record $143 per barrel in July 2008. The Saudis are seeking to maintain a price environment in which US shale producers and other tough-oil operators will be driven out of the market. Nigeria obtains 75% of its revenues from oil sales; Russia’s, 50%; and Venezuela’s, 40%. Algeria and Angola are also implicated. The fall of the House of Saud may be provoked by a reduction in the price of oil. Incapable of reforming its life-style, the kingdom is borrowing hand over fist, to the point that according to financial analysts, it will probably collapse within two years. Syria is very bad news for the Saudis, who have hitched their survival for 70 years to Pax Americana. Now, that US-defended order appears to be unraveling before their eyes. Instead, the new normal is Washington cutting diplomatic deals that promise to embolden the kingdom’s worst enemy in Iran. Faced with a deal between Iran and the P5+1 on the former’s nuclear program, an understanding between the Jewish State and the House of Saud is inevitable. Saudi Arabia now is Israel’s de-facto ally, hence the violence.
