Behind the Scenes on the Zama Zama Story

Seven years ago, Johann Janse van Rensburg bought the Old Sallie Mine just around the corner from Carnival City near Springs. It was his dream to rebuild the historic venue for weddings and functions, but his biggest passion was his 47 Fresian horses.
For the first few years, his dream became a reality until some unwelcome visitors arrived: a horde of destructive and dangerous illegal miners, intent on reaching the gold deposits beneath Johan’s property. Now all that’s left of his house is a burnt-out shell, his carriages have been destroyed, his horses slaughtered, his dogs poisoned.
In researching this story, I visited the property with Johan and the police. The miners scattered when they saw the police. But I realised how impossible it would be for them to provide 24-hour security to individual homeowners, despite what our Constitution might state. As a result, Johan’s property is no longer his: even the bricks have been carried away and his yard is littered with obstacles like barbed wire and branches to make access difficult. It’s a dangerous situation, the miners are armed with spades, picks and axes.
Johan has opened 34 cases over the past few months and according to property lawyers, his only option is to sue the state. In the meantime, he’s in limbo: no home, no income, no hope of ever getting his property back until the Zama Zamas have what they want. It was clear to me that this would be an interesting story with many layers. One man’s dream turned to dust; the inability of the state to protect property rights and the life of the miner, desperate to make money whatever the cost.
We began by documenting Johan’s story, then used a hidden camera to try to film miners at work. Fortunately Johan had video footage of his prize Fresian horses and we were able to conjure up an image of what the place was like in its heyday. The difficulties were in trying to get the police to comment and to get a response from the miners. I eventually managed to track down a former miner, who explained the tactic of making life hell for the occupant of a property that has been ear-marked and in this way driving him off the land to begin the hunt for gold.
